Welcome to the Literature Club! It's always been a dream of mine to make something special out of the things I love. EGMNow ranked it 16th in their list of the 25 Best Games of 2017. ĭoki Doki Literature Club! won several awards at IGN's Best of 2017 Awards, including "Best PC Game", "Best Adventure Game", "Most Innovative" and "Best Story", all of which were "People's Choice". In addition, Tom Philip, from the men's magazine GQ, called it one of the scariest games he has ever played. Gita Jackson from Kotaku claims that it is a "truly special game".

The game itself contains suicide, self-harm, mentions of depression, and graphic images of death.ĭoki Doki Literature Club! includes five main characters: the protagonist, controlled by the player, Monika, the club's president, Sayori, the club's vice-president in Act 1, Yuri, the club's vice-president in Act 2 and so forth, and Natsuki.ĭoki Doki Literature Club!'s initial reception was overwhelmingly positive and it quickly gained a cult following. The first few hours of Act 1 go normally like any other dating simulator before everything changes in Act 2, turning into a game of the psychological horror genre with heavy use of breaking the fourth wall. While they aren’t really the focus of the scene I feel like this would’ve added some more personality and scenery to the game. The general gameplay of Doki Doki Literature Club! is designed to lure players into a sense of comfort before subverting their expectations.

One of the issues is there aren’t a lot of backgrounds. While I think the animation and character models look great I wish they were a bit more expressive and showed more emotion, possibly even having their lips move while they’re supposed to be talking. The animation and characters all look great, and usually have the anime look to fit their bubbly, perky, and disturbed personalities. The new plus stories give some great new depth to the characters as it shows the origins of the friendships and the literature club. This poetry was a part of the game I was dreading but it was for the most part quite good. The poetry sometimes shows the chinks in the armor of your fellow member’s bubbly personalities, and how they could be manipulated in the ways they are. The characters are bubbly and fun which makes the moments of darkness that much more surprising and hurt you as a person more.
